Dexture Update.

On Saturday, Dex had his first Bloodroot Treatment. This is the beginning of his Herbal for of Chemo. He handled it like a Champ and hasn't shown any side effects to date.

On Sunday Dexter hung with Santa and his friends Baxter, Emi, Chloe, Chu Chu and the whole DHR, District Dog and Unleash Crew during the Pictures with Santa Event.

With daily visits from past DHR Rescues and his local fans in the Hood Dexter remains in high spirits.

Dexter Needs Your Help

On a cold fall day in New York Animal Care & Control found Dexter roaming around the Bronx. When Bea from Dog Habitat saw him, he was locked behind the cold bars of the facility. Despite his malnourishment he was able to convey to her that he was the one she should take to the no-kill rescue. Dog Habitat routinely visits the ACC and pulls as many dogs as they can for a better chance of permanent placement.
Dexter wagged his skinny tail and looked at Bea with those Doe eyes, which she interpreted as "take me with you...you won't regret it."

Dexter currently weighs seven pounds: half the weight he should be. Rather than being placed with the other dogs at the rescue, Bea decided that Dexter needed round-the-clock attention because of his frail condition. During the day she brings Dexter to her retail shop so she can feed him every two hours. He stays in the back room on a fluffy bed with a heated blanket. She brings him home at night and Dexter cuddles on her lap while the family watches television. Bea has three pups of her own and Dexter has become good pals with them. He gets excited to watch them jump and run; he wants to be part of all the action when the dogs start to play.

Other than having a common kennel cough and being underweight the ACC said they weren't aware of any other problems. The day before Thanksgiving, Dog Habitat brought Dexie to Hope Veterinary to see Dr. Barsky. It turns out Dexter has a big sore in his throat which makes it painful for him to eat. It could be a swollen gland or a foreign object lodged near his throat. X-rays were taken and tests were done, but the findings were inconclusive. That vet visit cost Dog Habitat $400.
Dex was put on a diet of cooked meats including homemade hamburgers, which he loves. His foster family shared their Thanksgiving turkey with Dexter...proving to be one of his favorite meals so far.
A few friends of Dog Habitat have stopped in to meet Dexter and all of them have fallen head over heels for the little guy. He’s been getting visits from people that aren't even “dog people”! They all say there is something special about this little guy… Maybe it's the perky, yet floppy ears? Maybe it's the lashes that fringe those dark lonely eyes? Or maybe it's the love he expresses by curling up in your arms. Whatever it is, everyone that meets him says his love is contagious. Needless to say Dexter is building a good size fan club.
After two weeks of round the clock care Dexie lost his appetite and lost what little weight he had gained. He was admitted to Verg (Veterinary Emergency & Referral Group) in Brooklyn on Wednesday November 31, under the care of Dr. Dennis Slade. Because he was emaciated and losing weight rapidly he would be staying at Verg until he was stabilized.
Dr. Slade has been extremely active in caring for Dexter, but since his weight is so low it will take some time and a lot of tests. Dog Habitat made a down payment of $2680 to Verg Hospital for all the tests and treatments that are scheduled. Dexter received IV fluids, his kennel cough is being treated, blood-work and an ultrasound have been ordered. Most importantly he’s getting a lot of love and attention from the amazing team at Verg. The care he’s receiving at Verg is aiding in his quick recovery.
Verg’s Emergency Specialist Katie Grzyb called Thursday morning ( Dec. 1) to inform Bea and Dog Habitat that Dexter ate well that morning, and Katie also added, that she too has fallen in love with Dexter.
Dog Habitat received another phone call later that night with very good news: Dexter's blood work came back better than expected! Dr. Slade will be starting him on B-12 treatments which will aid in getting his appetite strong; we’re sure he's missing his burgers and turkey treats. We're looking forward to getting him back with Dog Habitat and his foster family to prepare a big plate of his favorites.
On Friday December 2, Bea received a phone call from Verg that Dexter would be released later in the day. He will receive out-patient treatment from Verg. Dr. Slade and his team are determined to get to the bottom of Dexter’s health issues and give him the care he needs, but the best place for Dexter is to be in the loving and cozy environment with his foster family, on his heated blanket, and enjoying this season’s Christmas beef-roast.
We're estimating Dexter is between four and five years old and is a Chihuahua mix. He has long slender legs that remind you of a little fawn. We believe Dexter once had a good home because he loves and trusts people so much. He's housebroken and very well behaved in his foster home.
The New York streets are a rough place for anyone and have been especially hard on Dexter. He seems to be a little depressed and mentally worn out. Who can blame him? Despite his emotional state there is a shining light in his heart that he shares with everyone he meets. After a few minutes with Dexter you can't help but have hope.

As of today, December 2, Dexter’s vet treatment has cost nearly $4000 and counting. Dexter’s life is worth every penny. Bea and the amazing people at Dog Habitat need your help.

Puppy face!

Reeses - a sweet new boy tied up outside someone's house by two kids. We found out he had several puncture wounds in his neck; he may have been used as a bait dog. A very sweet boy who would be good in an only-dog home. Other dogs make him nervous and we're trying to work on socializing him. He's very young, probably less than a year old and he absolutely loves people. Plus he's gorgeous.

Suki was a tiny am-staffy found tied up near a train station and rescued by DHR. She stayed with us for a while and though she loved people we quickly found that she does not care for dogs. She has been transferred to a facility where she can get the care and desensitization she needs..plus an outdoor run! Our new pups are named after the seven dwarfs. New Rescues Arriving Tomorrow!

Hello all! We have 8 new rescues arriving tomorrow - a momma and her 7 puppies - they appear to be pittie/boxer mixes but we'll get a better look tomorrow. Here's an ACC photo

They were on the ACC Euth list because they have ringworm (an easily treated fungal infection) so we'll have them in isolation from all the other dogs. This brings our rescue count to 23 now! Please donate whatever you can - toys, blankets, towels, money (helps pay the vet bills!), treats, food or volunteer hours. We are in need of any and all help! We're always looking for fosters for our dogs, too!

Also, come support Dog Habitat and other rescues this Saturday at WSP for Adoptapalooza! It's going to be pretty awesome, actually.

Sleepy CHUBBY little MONSTERS

Oh my god what a CHAMP Rascal is. Today he went out, didn't bark at any birds, said hi to Franklin and Little Riley in the street and then visited a bookstore! I am so proud of this monster!

In case you couldn't tell, Mama and pups hadn't seen each other for a good thirty seconds and needed a GIGANTIC I HAVENT SEEN YOU IN FOREVER greeting. You know. Like how much a dog misses his owner after five seconds of being gone.

Current Rescues Looking for Homes at Dog Habitat Rescue

So I know I made this post already on the other blog (www.unleashdogs.blogspot.com) but since I am now situated here I'll remake it for those who were not aware there is another blog out there in the wilderness of the interwebs (now www.unleashbrooklyn.blogspot.com)

So here is a post about our current doggy rescues at Dog Habitat - we also have a 5-week old kitten that is so adorable you might go blind from the cuteness.

This is Rascal. He is a young Min Pin with a heart of gold. He is one of Dog Habitat's most cuddly kids. He loves nothing more than to snuggle in your lap and nap for hours. But he also loves to be outside and explore in the grass. I have been working with him for about two weeks on loose-leash walking. He was undersocialized as a pup and quickly grew very reactive to things in the street such as trucks and bikes but has improved GREATLY since his training started. He knows basic commands such as sit, down, stay and wait and has a couple of tricks up his sleeve as well! He's an extremely intelligent dog who just needs a bit more training on the leash. He loves all other dogs but is a bit intimidating on the leash...just a bit of noise that positive reinforcement training is working quickly to extinguish!

This is Phoenix! A young Pretty Pitty, she and her four pups were rescued from an apartment fire in the Bronx. She came to Dog Habitat extremely emaciated and malnourished and with the help of Stella and Chewy's and lots of love she has gained back weight and has looks to kill (with kisses of course). She is a gorgeous young lady and extremely sweet. She will literally drown you in kisses all day if you let her. She's extremely food-motivated and will be a breeze to train. She walks wonderfully on the leash but can be a bit shy around strangers in the street - something that will eventually go away with further socialization.

This is Buddy. He is an extremely young Beagle-ish mix who was found wandering the streets. He's very shy around new people but with treats and patience he warms up really fast. He's good with most dogs but needs more work on the leash. We're looking for someone with lots of patience to come spend time getting to know Buddy and ultimately foster to adopt him. He's a very sweet boy...he is a superb cuddler. The training that Buddy needs to fully adjust to a home life is difficult to accomplish in a daycare environment but once he's placed in a home with stability he will improve quickly.

This is Wolfy. A senior shepherd-chow mix with lots of love to give. She's extremely sweet around all people and loves to spend time walking outside. Because she's older she has low tolerance for the antics of young dogs that want to play so we're looking for a home without other dogs - she really wants to be the "only child". She's an amazing girl who really needs a second chance.

Not available for adoption yet - these are our Pretty Pretty Pitty Puppies. They are Phoenix's lovely kids and they are currently in training for a life as service and/or therapy dogs. Three girls (Squishy, Nugget and Nottie) and the boy Stavros are practically baby geniuses. They're fearless and walk remarkably well on the leash. Whoever adopts these kids will have to agree to either go through with a life of service for kids or certify them with Therapy Dog International to visit kids and other patients in hospitals.

These two sparkly gentlemen are London and Huxley. They are male Maltese dogs around 3-4 years old rescued from a puppy mill. Before coming to Dog Habitat they lived in cages, were used solely for breeding purposes and never got to see grass or the outdoors. They have warmed up very quickly and like being around people and other dogs-they're just a bit shy when you go to pick them up but they seem to like being held. They walk on leash pretty well but aren't really housebroken since they lived in cages up until they got to DHR. Please help give these boys a second chance!

Ladybug! She was found on the side of a highway GROSSLY obese. At Dog Habitat we got her weight down (she has lost probably close to 40 or more lbs since she has been here) and socialized her to people and other dogs. She loves every single person she meets and is extremely patient and gentle with all dogs. She has a bit of separation anxiety sometimes but it will be easier to resolve in a stable and loving home. Bug is housebroken and excels at leash-walking. She's a very sweet girl that loves to be wherever you are and will follow you to the end of the world!

Dog Habitat Rescue Welcomes our Three Newest Rescues: Jeffrey Lebowski, Lovebug and Fife!

Lovebug

Lovebug is so much more cute than these photos - they do her so little justice but she's just so awkward and gangly when it comes to the camera! She's a very young Chihuahua mix and is extremely sweet. She's very very shy around other dogs and can get a little snappy when they get really in her face but with training she will definitely ease up. She's an extremely clever girl (I think it was Empire of the Dog's Denise Herman who said Chihuahuas are the NEW Border Collies) - she has already learned sit, spin and "dance" all in one little training session. Very food motivated, very loving and VERY VERY CUTE. Lovebug is the perfect size for anyone! She is also a DREAM for leash-walking.

Jeffrey Lebowski (that's right. we went there!)

Formerly known as "Danger" (seriously what kind of a name is that for the SWEETEST DOG EVER), Jeffrey (or Lebowski or The Dude, His Dudeness, El Duderino(if you're not into the whole brevity thing) is a six-month-old Pit Bull/Lab/possibly St. Bernard (SERIOUSLY look at those freckles!) mix. He is literally the sweetest dog I have ever met. Because he's a puppy he needs a little bit of work on his manners (but only because he constantly wants to jump in your lap and shower you with kisses). He is amazing on the leash and wants to say hi to everyone in the entire world. This dog is seriously in love with life, people, other dogs, EVERYTHING! If you're looking to have a lot of fun for a very long time come in and meet Jeffrey!

Fife

Okay so these photos totally suck because I used my cell phone (didn't want to scare the new kid with my gigantic flash). Fife was found by a nice lady at a bus stop sitting in a cardboard box with a cable tied around his collar as a leash. SERIOUSLY? Talk about a rough however long he's been out there for. We don't know much about this beautiful boy except that he's a Chihuahua mix with an adorable overbite and although shy at first warms up pretty fast and likes to be held and burrow in blankets (shocker). Hopefully as time passes we'll get to know him better. If anyone out there is a Chihuahua fanatic (in a good way..) please come in to meet this awesome kid!

These three kittens came to us from an Unleash client who found them motherless. Thank you Emily for taking them in and caring for them while you could. They are now bottle feeding with Nicole who has taken on this great task. Their first few hours with us seemed touch and go, but as you can see EYES ARE OPEN! All three are doing fantastic. Thanks a million Nicole!

In October of 2009, Unleash:Brooklyn and District Dog launched
Dog Habitat Rescue, a 501c3 Non Profit organization with the purpose of rescuing and rehabilitating animals in need of care.

Our rescue facility is like no other in NYC. With a holistic approach to rehabilitation, the foundation of our program is based on supervised socialization with both humans and animals alike, preparing our rescues for life beyond the shelter.

Some of the highlights of our first year of operation include:
- Dog Habitat Rescue was selected by the Mayor's Alliance of NYC to appear on the inaugural episode of NBC's "Maria's Pet Project", which airs every Thursday evening in the greater NYC metropolitan area. The series has continued to air every Thursday evening, promoting adoption and responsible pet ownership. Dog Habitat Rescue has been thrilled to re-appear on four additional episodes, and see over 25 of our dogs placed in homes as a result of our participation.

- DHR provided shelter for dozens of feral cats on multiple occasions in our partnership with the Feral Initiative of NYC, so they could conduct their TNR (Trap, Neuter, Release) program in Brooklyn.

- This past December, Dog Habitat Rescue was recognized by ABC network as the country's first green, environmentally-friendly shelter.

As rewarding as these merits are for us, they do not compare to the satisfaction of having adopted-out over 100 dogs and cats in our first year of operation. In addition, we have had the pleasure of having successfully reunited lost animals and their families through our pet “Amber Alert” system.

This year we want to do more -

In the first two months of 2011, DHR has rescued over 50 dogs and placed an outstanding 40 into loving homes. Some of those dogs were pulled from the euthanasia list at NYC Animal Care & Control shelters, and others were rescued from a puppy mill in West Virginia by the Humane Society.

As the city's Animal Care and Control shelters face reductions in their annual budget (down by over $1.5 million in 2 years) the demand for help from organizations like Dog Habitat Rescue continues to build, and our responsibilities are growing, as we strive to ensure that New York City is a kill-free city by 2015.

We are ready to continue working to achieve our goal of rescue and rehabilitation for every animal brought to our shelter.
